About

Blein ny Gaelgey, the Year of the Manx Language (YML) is being organised by Jeebin, the Manx Language Network, in conjunction with the community in the Isle of Man. ANYONE can get involved!

WHY?

The ethos at the heart of the Year is ‘Manx language for all’. Extensive research shows that learning languages combats social isolation, fosters community cohesion, and is good for both mental and physical well-being.
Supporting opportunities for learners to engage with the Manx language develops an enhanced sense of place and understanding of the wider world. This enables people to recognise the unique identity of the Isle of Man and gives a sense of pride and belonging in our island community.
All of these aspects of the Manx language align with the five priorities of the Isle of Man Government’s Our Island Plan, and the National Development Strategy for Culture and the Arts.
The Isle of Man is fully signed up to the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. The Isle of Man has obligations to fulfil the conditions of the charter.
Jeebin has set the aim of increasing the number of Manx speakers to 5,000 by 2032.
