Culture Vannin has provided grant funding for Biskee Brisht to support the creation and release of their second album, Treading Water / Brebbal Ushtey — a fully bilingual recording in Manx and English.

Recorded entirely in both languages, with translations by Bob Carswell, the album represents a major step forward for contemporary Manx-language music. Biskee Brisht are known for blending traditional and modern influences, and Treading Water / Brebbal Ushtey continues that approach while placing the Manx language at the heart of the project.

Culture Vannin’s support reflects its ongoing commitment to encouraging the use of Manx in new creative work, particularly in areas such as modern music where the language can reach new listeners and younger generations.

Chris Williamson, Vice Chair of Culture Vannin, said:
“By presenting each track in both English and Manx, the album demonstrates that Manx-language music continues to be part of a living, contemporary creative scene and that it isn’t limited to traditional contexts. Its release during Blein ny Gaelgey – Year of the Manx Language 2026 makes the project especially timely, reinforcing the importance of producing new, relevant cultural work in Manx for today’s audiences.”

The album will be officially launched at Laxey Pavilion on Saturday 31st January, with a special live performance by Biskee Brisht featuring songs in both English and Manx.

Ruby Biscoe-Taylor of Biskee Brisht said:
“We have been lucky enough to perform in the UK, Ireland, France and Germany – singing our songs in Manx to so much love and appreciation and I have found it such an accessible way to introduce people to the language. When they find themselves singing along to a catchy tune, they learn some new words in the process! I love to sing in Manx because I find it makes me feel more connected to the heritage and culture of where I grew up, and ties me to the family that lived here before me.  We’re delighted to have been generously supported by a Culture Vannin grant and to have the opportunity to launch this album as an official Blein ny Gaelgey – Year of the Manx Language 2026 event.”
