Culture Vannin brings languages together for UNESCO International Mother Language Day event this Saturday.
Representatives from over eleven different language communities living on the Isle of Man will be coming together for an UNESCO International Mother Language Day celebration this Saturday 21st February at the Promenade Methodist Church, Loch Promenade, Douglas.
The free event organised by Culture Vannin and Mooinjer Veggey is open to anybody to attend between 12 noon and 4.30pm and is taking places as part of the “Year of the Manx Language” celebrations.
Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and exchange language and culture with representatives from; Brazil, Lithuania, Greece, The Philippines, Latvia, South Africa, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, Bulgaria and of course the Isle of Man. Language delegates and members of the public will be able to participate in free “Mini Manx Language Workshops” and collect information from Café Lingo, One World Centre and find out more about the Manx Language inclusion that the Office of Tynwald has been developing.
Event organiser for Culture Vannin, Tiffany Kerruish is excited to meet everyone on Saturday;
“The afternoon is going to be wonderfully colourful, fun and inclusive and is a ‘must do’ for anybody with either an interest in languages or a desire to meet new people and discover more about the cultures of those living and working here within our rich, diverse Island community. Each participating language will be represented by a display table with interactive activities to engage in. There will be some brief introductory talks and even some song and dance workshops to enjoy. The event is free to attend and ‘family friendly’ with some “Crafty Manx” on offer for children from the Manx Nursery, Mooinjer Veggey – Everyone is welcome to come for the full event or drop in whenever they can.”
This is the first time there has been a formal event to mark International Mother Language Day on the Isle of Man and Tiffany is pleased that this event is happening during such an important year for the Manx Language,
“This globally celebrated occasion is an important opportunity to reflect on the importance of our own Manx Gaelic community language. Manx is growing in popularity and speaker numbers all the time and to celebrate this while recognising the diversity of language all around us is important and positions Manx Gaelic as a living, evolving and inclusive language that is open to everybody to discover and enjoy. We are grateful to the Domestic Event Fund for their support and we hope that the event will attract additional footfall to nearby shops and cafes. “
